ToggleEarth Connection Meditation
A 23-minute audio to help you access the power and groundedness of your innate connection to the earth element, the central tenant of Taoist philosophy.
We disconnect from the larger earth outside of us and our smaller earth inside of us when we go through situations that are too painful to process. When this disconnection becomes a habit, we suffer.
In this meditation, we look at our connection to the earth and its importance to the center of our being. We explore the power of being with the earth as a way to reconnect to ourselves, and the larger world around us.
This 23-minute audio file is a guided somatic journey into deeper layers of ourselves, set to binaural beats attuned to the earth’s natural harmonic frequencies. It is also a great way to get a taste of the work offered in our transpersonal counseling sessions.
Earth Connection Transcript
Hello, this is Dara, and I’d like to welcome you to today’s meditation on connecting with the Earth and with ourselves.
When we go through a really painful situation, we sometimes need to disconnect with a really central part of ourselves in order to get through it.
And this disconnection can become habituated and systemic as a way to numb out from our surroundings or from unprocessed pain that we’re still holding in our being.
So in today’s meditation, we’re going to touch in to that pain just a little bit and strengthen our connection with the earth and with ourselves in the process.
Setting the Stage
Before we get started, let’s take a moment to make ourselves comfortable.
Making sure you’re in a private setting and perhaps a safe place to close your eyes. Sitting comfortably or lying down, begin to take in the space around you, letting your eyes move as they want to move and noticing where your body touches the ground beneath you, beginning to sense inside of yourself and take note of how you’re feeling in your body, what sensations are coming and going in different parts of you.
Perhaps landing on an area that feels comforting and supportive, noticing what it’s like to feel that sensation of goodness and connectivity to your body. And taking a few deep breaths in this space of openness.
Connecting with the Earth
As we begin today’s meditation, you can let your eyes gently relax or close if that feels comfortable, and bring your hands to rest comfortably on your belly or wherever feels best to you. Bring your attention back to the earth below you, where your body is making contact with the ground, and allow yourself to feel supported and met. Notice the sensation of solidity and support beneath you.
The invitation here is to simply enjoy and rest in the feeling of being held, cradled, comforted by the Earth’s eternal presence below you. What is it like to simply enjoy and rest in this feeling for a few breaths?
Acknowledging Earth’s Support
The earth is our mother. She is the larger mother of us all. She’s the mother of all plants, animals, and people. Within her belly is the petroleum we use to fuel our modern world, the minerals we extract to make machines and jewelry to adorn ourselves.
She creates the wood we use for fires. She holds all of the water that we use for drinking, for swimming, and that all ocean creatures live in. The earth is the center of all things. Every aspect of our life revolves around the earth. And we are made of earth and return to earth when we die. Everything comes back eventually in a rhythmic cycle to the earth.
If you have your hands on your belly, I invite you to feel the connection of this centrality of your being with the earth inside of the center part of your own being in your belly, where you take in food and receive nourishment from the earth, where you can find your center and feel grounded, supported. Simply connect to the sensation of your belly and enjoy that here for a few breaths.
Addressing Disconnection
When we go through a painful situation or circumstance, especially when we’re younger, we can often disconnect from this central part of ourselves and from the earth below us, because it feels too painful to stay connected to our experience, to our bodies. And we just want to be somewhere else.
While this is an okay and sometimes necessary thing to do, when it becomes a permanent way of being and our body forgets what it’s like to be connected to the earth, it becomes more painful to stay disconnected than it does to simply feel our pain when we’re in a place where we’re able to.
Instead of numbing out, the invitation in this meditation is to move towards feeling. Because feeling and being connected to the earth, to our own bodies, and to the other humans in our lives is part of what makes us what we are. We are meant to be a part of a larger organism, the web of life. A neural network that extends beyond the boundaries of our own being and into all things.
Offering Sympathy to the Earth
I’d like to invite you to touch in just a little bit to an aspect of your relationship with the earth that you are not proud of, perhaps. There’s an image that comes to mind, or a feeling or a sensation of the ways that you contribute to pollution, to plastic being consumed and disposed of.
To the landfills, to burning petroleum, without overwhelming yourself or feeling like it’s all your fault, the invitation is to be with this little bit of earth inside of you and simply say I am so sorry that things are this way. I feel you. I am connected to you.
The intention here is simply to offer our sympathy and support to the earth. In an acknowledgment that while we might not hold the key to stopping all pollution, we can at least be in support and sympathy and show up for her in a meaningful way.
Reflecting on Personal Disconnection
Now I’d like you to think of something in your own life, something that keeps you disconnected from yourself. Using your own body as a microcosm of the earth. Perhaps you use a substance or a habit to numb out, to disconnect from yourself. Perhaps there is a subtle feeling of turning away, of abandoning yourself to others, to situations where it feels too difficult to remain in your center or true to yourself.
Only feel into this a little bit so that you don’t overwhelm yourself. The goal here is not to digest everything we’ve ever been through, but just to touch into things a little bit more. To begin to establish new neural networks and patterns of feeling into things within our own hearts and minds.
What is it like to be with that part of yourself that you use to disconnect? What is it like to simply offer support and compassion to your little piece of earth inside saying? I feel you. I hear you. I am so sorry that things are this way for you right now.
Closing Affirmations
The invitation here is simply to give yourself that sympathy, that empathy that you need to feel supported, not trying to change anything, just allowing yourself to feel your own pain a little bit more. And giving that pain as an offering to the larger world and recognizing the connection between the two. Placing your hands on your heart or on your belly, affirm that in feeling your own pain and reconnecting with yourself, you are making a difference in the earth. You are helping the larger collective, giving this gift of your heartfelt feeling.
Transitioning Back
Slowly feeling supported by the ground, perhaps keeping your eyes gently closed. Start to return to the room that you’re in now. I invite you as you transition back into your own space, to bring that feeling of wholeness and connectivity within your own belly and heart into your day with you.
Slowly take in the sounds around you. Open your eyes. Notice the colors, the shapes of the room you’re in. And tune in to how your body feels. Does it feel different than before you started this meditation? If it does, are there adjectives or a way of describing what this sensation feels like in your being that you can use to hold onto it?
Concluding the Meditation
Taking a few deep breaths as you stretch your arms and legs. Wiggle your toes and ground back into the room that you’re in. As always, I encourage you to make any notes or create an artistic expression of what this journey to the earth and to yourself has evoked in you.
Maybe this is through drawing or dance or journaling. Maybe something else. I sincerely thank you for taking the time with me, with yourself, and with the earth to show up today for all of us. Thank you and I’ll see you next time.
